Project Summary

2020

The translation project for Kimochi Bible started in January 1993 and was expected to end in December; 2013.The completion date has been revised to 2018 due to reasons beyond our control including inadequate funding. The New Testament was completed, Published and officially launched in November 2000; the project is in the stage of Typesetting. In 2020 we plan to finish up the  Compiling work,  typesetting, Printing and Launching the Kimochi Bible.

It is desired that in 2020 the following activities will be carried out:-

  • Compiling all the work
  • Printing.
  • shipping
  • Launching

Traditionally the Kimochi community is marred by evil practices such as witchcraft, alcoholism, polygamy and idolatry. Kimochi people have longed to have the Bible in their mother tongue for many years. This continuing translation is a blessing to this community. It is expected that, availability of the Bible in kimochi language will have a positive effect on church growth and deepening of personal faith that will lead to changed behavior in the community-minimizing the bad practices. . Having the Bible in their language will not only enable them to understand the Bible better, but it will also help preserve their language and cultural heritage.

It is targeted that a total of 250,000 people will benefit from this project.

Our partners in this project are Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Pentecostal churches in the project area. The Bible Society has learnt that, Church involvement in the Bible cause brings great success to Bible translation work.

Beneficiary focus

The target audience are all Christians and non-Christians who speak and read this language. The Bible is expected to be used for evangelism as well as for liturgy by the more than 300 thousand or so Kimochi speakers who currently use the Swahili Bible.

How have the needs and perspective of the beneficiaries helped shape the design of the project?

Thorough research was done before Kimochi translation started. The Church

in the language area requested the Bible Society to facilitate the

translation and was ready to partner by providing translators, reviewers

and office space.

National Context

The Kimochi-Chagga speakers had the New Testament for the first time in 1939. This was the first and only New Testament in any of the Chagga dialects. Since that time nothing else has appeared in this language. This means that speakers of Kimochi have never had the complete Bible or the books of the Old Testament Scriptures in their own language. Moreover the 1939 New Testament is now outdated and out of print. This means that speakers have had to use the Swahili Scriptures for most of their Scripture need. Hence the request by the churches to prepare the complete Bible in this major Chagga dialect to enable speakers to read the Scriptures in their own language.

Need

ISP funding allocated to the project is inadequate to cover all costs. This contributes the project to take much longer to complete. The undesignated fund from the Bible Society may not be available to supplement the project total budget

The completion of the translation of the Bible can be improved or expedited if more funding was made to hire the translators on full time basis. Currently the translators are also given assignments by their Diocese. They must be attached to the church because what they are paid by the project is too little to sustain their living.

With the current pace of translation the work may not be completed according to schedule.

How this project will help the beneficiaries

The Bible is expected to help evangelism as well as churches growth. But also to change the Kimochi behavior. Availability of the Word of God in Kimochi language will also impart Bible

knowledge to the language speakers that will help them to grow in faith

and spirituality – such knowledge will help them to ward off evil

practices like occult, idolatry, rampant suicide behavior and polygamy

  • Publishing and printing the book of Lamentation as a portion

  • Typesetting, printing and publishing Kikaguru Bible

It is expected that, availability of the Bible in Kikagulu language will have a positive effect on church growth and deepening of personal faith that will lead to changed behavior in the community-minimizing the bad practices. Having the Bible in their language will not only enable them to understand the Bible better, but it will also help preserve their language and cultural heritage.

It is targeted that a total of 405,00 people will benefit from this project.

The Bible will give access of the word of God to people of all ages, all Christian denominations, as well as people of other faiths. A large percentage of the Kikaguru tribe is Christian. Some few are Muslim and others still cling to traditional faith.

National Context

Kikaguru is spoken near Morogoro, by around 405,000 people. They are looking forward to a translation of the entire Bible (including the Deuterocanonical books) in their mother tongue. This project has been underway for several years now. The New Testament was completed,printed in 2009 and launched in May 2010. Having the Scriptures in their language will not only enable them to understand the Bible better, but it will also serve to preserve their language and their cultural heritage.

The New Testament is now in distribution in the target audience area. The translators work exceedingly hard on the Old Testament and Deutero-Canonical books. One of the translators has been to Ghana for training on the translation of the DC books.

Need

Research

The New Testament in Kaguru was launched in May 2010 in a very colourful ceremony which was attended and cheered by thousands of Kaguru speakers. The enthusiasm shown at the event was amazing. Distribution of the New Testaments is still continuing in churches among the Kaguru area.

A quick survey has shown that despite of 50% discount on the price of the New Testament many cannot afford to buy one.

Testimonies

Canon Msegu of Morogoro town, is a Kaguru language speaker. Here he gives his testimony after reading the Portion of Job in his heart language. He had this to say; “I read the Job Portion in Kikaguru and I am very much impressed by this message and the language translated in my mother tongue. I could understand better than when I read it in Swahili language. I am very much motivated to continue reading the Bible in my language, and look forward to seeing the full Bible in Kikaguru”.

This is according to the Tanzanian statistics and Joshua Project statistics.

Beneficiary focus

Ha tribe or Waha in Swahili are people who live in Kigoma Region on the Eastern side of lake Tanganyika. The estimated number of the Ha is 1,958,000 (http://www.joshuaproject.net/people-profile.php?peo3=12023&rog3=TZ). The language is known as Kiha in Swahili and Ha language in English. At least 25% (but probably more) of the Kiha population are Christians. A few, however, are Muslim or adhere to the traditional religion, especially those in remote areas.

The beneficiaries will include all age groups.

How have the needs and perspective of the beneficiaries helped shape the design of the project?

-The Kiha language speakers do not have any reading material in their language. However, studies have shown that they predominantly communicate in their own language and having Bible in their language will be a great forum for them to have an encounter with the word of God.

-The Church in the language area requested the Bible Society to provide them with Bible in their language. That request necessitated translation of the Bible in this language to meet the Scripture needs of this tribe.

Kiha language is spoken by Ha tribe that is situated in the North-East part of Kigoma in western part of Tanzania, by around 1,958,000 people. This project is in progress and the language speakers are anxiously waiting for it. The Kiha speakers communicate mostly in their language, as many people do not speak Swahili. The project aims at translating the entire Bible, including the Deuteron-Canonical books into this language. Having the Scriptures in their language will not only enable them to understand the Bible better, but it will also serve to preserve their language and their cultural heritage

The Ha community is fond of speaking their vernacular and are enthusiastic about having the Word of God in their heart language for better understanding, rather than other languages that they don’t understand properly.

Portion of Luke in Kiha was launched in 2015 in a very colourful ceremony which was attended and cheered by thousands of Kiha speakers. The enthusiasm shown at the event was amazing.

“ Before the I received the Gospel of Luke in my heart language I was a lazy to reader of the Bible. But when I got the Portion written in my language, I developed much interest in reading it. And from reading it I came across the word which changed my life. From reading the Portion of Luke I came to know that Jesus called those who had heavy loads to surrender their loads to Him. I knew I had many heavy loads such as smoking, drunkenness, fighting at home. Then I decided to give my life to Jesus who changed my life completely. I am no longer drinking alcohol, no smoking, or fighting at home”

This project was amply researched before it was started in 2004. As soon as the New Testament is ready more research will be necessary so that we can make sure that the published Scriptures reach the right people and are used where possible. The translation project for Kirimi Bible started in January 1999 and was expected to end in December; 2018.The completion date has been revised to 2020 due to reasons beyond our control including inadequate funding. The New Testament was completed, Published and officially launched in November 2010; and the translation of the Old Testament is still in progress, with some of the books translated and checked by our Translation Consultant.This is the first Bible translation for Kirimi speakers. In 2020 we plan to continue with Team review, Community review. New Testament and Old Testament  harmonization, Computer Assisted Publisher (CAP) checks and Translation Consultant’s (TC’s) checks.

Kirimi people have longed to have the Bible in their mother tongue for many years. This continuing translation is a blessing to this community. It is expected that, availability of the Bible in Kirimi language will have a positive effect on church growth and deepening of personal faith that will lead to changed behavior in the community-minimizing the bad practices. . Having the Bible in their language will not only enable them to understand the Bible better, but it will also help preserve their language and cultural heritage.It is targeted that a total of  1048,000 people will benefit from this project.Our partners in this project are Lutheran, Anglican, and Pentecostal churches in the project area. The Bible Society has learnt that, Church involvement in the Bible cause brings great success to Bible translation work.This project in line with Philadelphia promise and the Bible Society of Tanzania Strategic Plan (2018 – 2022).

Beneficiary focus

The Bible will give access of the word of God to people of all ages, all Christian denominations, as well as people of other faiths. A large percentage of the Kirimi tribe is Christian. Some few are Muslim and others still cling to traditional faith.

How have the needs and perspective of the beneficiaries helped shape the design of the project?

It is the first Bible in Kirimi language. The New Testament was published and printed in 2010 and that publication created a lot of anxiety for the full Bible in Kirimi language.

Kirimi is spoken near Singida, The Kirimi people have long been ready for a translation of the Bible in their mother tongue. The project aims at translating the entire Bible into this language. Having the Scriptures in their language will not only enable them to understand the Bible better, but it will also serve to preserve their language and their cultural heritage.

National Context

Kirimi (Kinyaturu) is spoken near Singida, by around 1,048,000 people. The Kirimi people have long been ready for a translation of the Bible in their mother tongue. The project aims at translating the entire Bible into this language. Having the Scriptures in their language will not only enable them to understand the Bible better, but it will also serve to preserve their language and their cultural heritage.

Need

-Team work spirit was a vital element in the success of the project.

The Bible Society learnt that, church involvement in the Bible cause brings great success.

Unfortunately the project was not consecutively funded in the last 4 years. Lack of funding has slowed down the progress of the translation. The undesignated fund from the Bible Society was not be available to due to budget constraint.

The completion of the translation of the Bible can be improved or expedited if more funding was made to hire the translators on full time basis. Currently the translators are also given assignments by their Diocese. They must be attached to the church because what they are paid by the project is too little to sustain their living. With the current pace of translation the work may not be completed according to schedule.

How this project will help the beneficiaries

A complete Bible available in Kirimi language will have a very positive effect on church growth and deepening of personal faith, and lead to changed behavior in the society; spiritually, morally and socially in comparison with their past life experiences.

Research

Research conducted in the project locality showed that the target audience are very much enthusiastic about the launching of the New Testament and the eventual completion of the full Bible. The translators; portray a high team spirit.

Testimonies

Launching portion of Daniel in Kirimi added value to the Kirimi speaker. Many people were very happy to read the book of Daniel and they told one of the translator that this will increase knowledge about the Bible but also for those who don’t have the Bible they will read and use in the churches.

FREE BIBLE FOR PRISONERS IN TANZANIA

15Meneja Mahusiano wa Chama Cha Biblia Rev. Samweli Mshana akikabidhi Biblia na mahitaji mbalimbali ya wafungwa kwa Mkuu wa Gereza la Msalato Afande Huruma Mwakaji.

Prisoners have little or no access to Bibles. They have plenty of free time that can be used maliciously when not preoccupied with useful activities. This project is intended to distribute free Bibles to prisoners giving them access to the Word of God. Prisoners will therefore, be influenced to read the Bible at their free time providing them chance to interact with the word of God and have an encounter with Jesus Christ the LORD.

This will be a three year program that will reach out to about 25,000 prisoners. A copy of the Bible can be shared by 5 prisoners.

We expect this project to have a big impact on prisoners in terms of behavior change, creating hope and making them good and responsible citizens when they regain their freedom and go back to the society. Behavior change will start while prisoners are still inmates. Experience show that those who encounter Jesus while in prison are exemplary in character and don’t cause trouble to others or prison authorities.

To provide 5000 free Bibles to prisoners in Tanzania.
