Trauma Healing

Trauma Healing

Healing the Wounds of Trauma through Audio program, healing sessions for Nyarugusu refugees camp, and the refugee affected community in Tanzania.

Project Summary

Scripture & Prayer

The Trauma Healing project aims at healing the wounded hearts of people so that they can forgive and meaningfully engage with the word of God.

In daily life, people experience trauma for various reasons such as abuse of rights, domestic violence, stigmatization, discrimination, and other socio-cultural practices that cause torture and unrest. These emotional feelings of insecurity to the victim cause life suffering.

The Society’s experience is that; trauma is the most common problem that is affecting a significant number of people in communities. It is for this reason that the Bible Society is seeking funds that will be used to implement this project, in Nyarugusu refugee camp in Kigoma region, where the intensity of trauma seems to be high.

It is desired that after four years span of the project there will be a vivid impact of behavioral change in terms of reduced Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and abuse of human rights, that there will be communities with God-fearing people.

Key Verse

  • Matthew 11:28 Come unto me and ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest

Prayer points

  • Pray that funds are available so that many people with trauma can be reached.
  • Pray for the traumatized people.
  • Pray for proper implementation of this project and that the required impact is achieved.

Project Goal

ToTs from Hombolo ward in training scaled

The use of Scripture materials (incl. Bibles and Audio listening) in the healing process will equip the local church with knowledge about trauma and trauma healing so that these mental health resources be used in the healing process in more groups. Also, the use of these Scripture materials will help enhance the beneficiaries’ experience of the life-changing message of the Bible and therefore promote attendance and church growth.

How this project will help the beneficiaries

Generally, persons with trauma are human beings created in the image of God and they deserve a good life like any other human being. They also need fulfillment of basic needs such as shelter, food, clothing, and such other needs like love and affection. Through the project, the beneficiaries will be helped to overcome the trauma of which they lived. During the healing process, they will gain knowledge about trauma and ways to overcome it; and in the long run, the communities will be transformed and live in harmony without discrimination of any form, condemnation of any kind.

Children and Vulnerable Adults

Children are one of the beneficiaries of the project as they are refugees as well and therefore exposed to the causes of trauma.
Adults at risk like children are also beneficiaries of the project because they are refugees and therefore exposed to the causes of trauma as well.

Safeguarding

Dealing with traumatized persons is dealing with vulnerable persons

Empowering them with knowledge on how to overcome trauma is one of the ways of safeguarding them. Also by calling upon all stakeholders particularly governments of countries of origin to settle existing disputes in their countries so that there is peace and tranquility to allow return home for their kinsmen who are living in Tanzania as refugees.

given3

The audience’s need in this project is healing the wounds of trauma that are existent in the hearts of beneficiaries as well as prevention of physical and psychological trauma that is experienced by refugees like loneliness, isolation, abuse of rights, loss of their loved ones, properties, and other valuables.

Kinyamwezi First Bible Translation

Project Summary

Scripture & Prayer

The Nyamwezi New Testament (Mhola Ya Chelu Yamwa Guku Na Mupizya Wiswe Yesu Kristo, © BFBS ) was published in 1951. The translation project did not continue with the Old Testament due to the lack of funds.

The Nyamwezi community and churches are, however, eager to see the complete Bible in their language, and so the Bible Society of Tanzania is currently looking ways to continue the translation work.

The aim is to translate the 66 books of the Old and New Testaments. This project is in line with the Philadelphia promise and the Strategic Plan of the Bible Society of Tanzania (2018 – 2022).

Project Goal

IMG 7580 scaled

To have the entire Bible published in Nyamwezi by the end of 2030 so that it can be used by the local Church, and can be read by speakers of the language.

Project goal’s relationship to overall bible society strategy

  • To translate the Bible into Nyamwezi will support the Church ministry and individual Christians. This is in line with the Strategic Plan of the Bible Society of Tanzania (2018-2022).
  • The Strategic Plan emphasizes the Bible Society’s responsibility to facilitate Bible translation into languages without the Bible, and to publish and print the same. The aim is to support the spiritual growth of the community by providing the Word of God in the mother tongue.

About the beneficiaries

Need for the Translation

The Nyamwezi people live Tabora in western Tanzania in the Kigoma, Rukwa and Tabora regions between Lake Victoria and Lake Rukwa. The estimated number of Nyamwezi speakers is 1,470,000. The Nyamwezi population is estimated to be 15% Christian and 25% Muslim, while 60% adhere to the traditional religion.

The need for a translation of the Old Testament and a revision of the New Testament translation was brought to the attention of the Bible Society by the main denominations in the Nyamwezi area.

Non-literate Population

According to the 2012 National Census, the average literacy rates in regions where Nyamwezi is spoken are as follows:

  • Tabora region: literacy rate 59% (M65.5%; F52.9%)
  • Kigoma region: literacy rate 76% (M82.7%; F70.2%)
  • Rukwa region: literacy rate 69.9 (M78.8; F61.8)

If found necessary, the translation of the Nyamwezi Bible will be accompanied by a separate literacy program.

National/Community Context

  • Currently, there are no reading materials in Nyamwezi. However, the use of the language is vigorous in many of the local areas, and thus having the Bible in the language will be an avenue for readers to encounter God through His word.
  • An additional indication of the language context is that the Fipa Church has constantly requested the Bible Society of Tanzania to provide the community with the Bible in their language.

Faith Comes by Hearing (FCBH)

Faith Comes by Hearing (FCBH)

Project Summary

2020

The Faith Comes By Hearing project brings together both literate and non-literate people to listen to the Scriptures communally.  Its setting is such that it  builds fraternity among the listeners. The program is friendly and well accepted by communal and circular people because it does not directly force them to become Christians, it also gives them opportunity to be group leaders. It use multi- powered devices which include use of batteries, electricity, and mechanical winding, or cranking. That is an advantage to the community because listeners are not subjected to necessity of batteries which they could otherwise not afford to buy and hence make the program unpopular. This Project extends to Zanzibar Island where  over 90% Muslim, but there are over 63 churches of different Christian denominations located at different parts of the Islands.

For the coming 5 years, beside the current areas of FCBH promotion, Bible Society of Tanzania plans to put more emphasis on Primary School, Secondary School, Prisons and people with visual disability PVD. This is in response to the Government of Tanzania policy through Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of National Education and Culture, Ministry of Health appealing to Religious organizations  to help build a society with good morals. This is a good opportunity to Bible Society.

Reason for Ranking

The Project have been ranked number 4 because the Bible Society is trying to put more emphasis on  Scriptures for Schools and Youths where most of them use Proclaimers in Faith Comes By Hearing program.

Project goal’s relationship to overall bible society strategy

Our strategic objective is to make the Word of God available to all Tanzanians. This project will reach Tanzanians of different backgrounds  through Scriptures in audio format. For the next coming 5 years putting more emphasis in primary, Secondary, Refugee camps and  Prisons

Through these Christians unions Students  can meet and listen the Word of God from the Proclaimer. The Bible Society intents to  engage the youths with the Word of God.

How have the needs and perspective of the beneficiaries helped shape the design of the project?

Through visits, researches and follow ups we learned that  both literate and non literate in rural areas ,schools, and people with visual disabilities  need to listen to the Word of God. This have helped the project to have a focal point or pre-determined out come which can be easily noticed.

National Context

Initially the project objective was to provide the Word of God to people who did not know how to read. However, with passage of time the programme grew up and became very popular not only among the illiterate people but also those who could read and write.Literates, illiterates  will now equally have access to Scriptures .Through listening groups listeners have the opportunity to go through the New Testament from the book of Mathew to the book of Revelation. This project will help  Christians strengthen their faith with increased knowledge about God.

The Bible Society has evidence of a number of people from TAZI audience and other non-believers who through Faith Comes By Hearing program have given their life to Christ.

Research

Research done in various parts of the country reveals that there are many people who do not read the printed Bible even if they know how to read and write but are ready to listen to the audio Bible. It has also been revealed that discussion based on Bible listening groups attract many people because they can get answers to many of their questions regarding Scriptures something they cannot get in their churches where it is not customary to ask questions in the course of preaching. The feeling of participation is also an added credit to Faith Comes By Hearing project.

– Research has also shown that TAZI audience is also very much interested in participating and join in FCBH listening groups and some are converted through this program. This has become a useful tool for the church growth.

As a result of FCBH in some areas the number of Christians has grown which has led to built bigger churches  to accommodate the growing number of Christians. Also there is a growing demand of proclaimers for more established listening groups.

Testimonies

Sr. Mary Temu a nun who worked in Zanzibar Catholic Primary School, said the TAZI audience in Zanzibar  bought from her more than 200 New Testament for their Children; the aim being  to use the NTs to teach their children against the Christian faith. Instead the results were quite opposite because some children shifted their faith and wanted to be baptised. After their aim has failed the TAZI parents decided to return the New Testaments to Sr. Mary because according to TAZI faith it is prohibited to destroy a book of faith.

Leadership track record

The Bible Society of Tanzania and other stakeholders have the capacity to implement such kind of project.

It is desired that in 2022 the following activities will be carried out:-

Printing 5,000 copies
Shipping and customs clearing 5,000 copies
Launching 5,000 copies of Machame Bible.
Traditionally the Kimachame community is marred by evil practices such as witchcraft, alcoholism, polygamy and idolatry. Kimachame people have longed to have the Bible in their mother tongue for many years. This continuing translation is a blessing to this community. It is expected that, availability of the Bible in kimachame language will have a positive effect on church growth and deepening of personal faith that will lead to changed behavior in the community-minimizing the bad practices. . Having the Bible in their language will not only enable them to understand the Bible better, but it will also help preserve their language and cultural heritage. It is targeted that a total of 250,000 people will benefit from this project. Our partners in this project are Lutheran, Anglican, Roman Catholic and Pentecostal churches in the project area.

About Partners:-
